This last one was inspired by the lumpy demon guys in "Shuck". I am perhaps overly fond of drawing short, lumpy things.

I love the incredibly weird covers for the books in the Choose Your Own Adventures series. (The books themselves always made me feel weirdly inadequate or stupid, like I was destined to die a horrible death no matter what I did!) And a recent story arc in Achewood featured a text adventure game starring Kim Jung Il. So this happened. I'm not really sure there's an adequate way to explain it.

Over on The Independant Gaming Source forums, someone started a thread called DRAW PUZZDOG. Puzzdog is apparently a game character that fights evil cats with magnets and hair dryers? What?

I drew this one a couple days after watching/being subjected to "Flash Gordon". CAN YOU TELL??????

And here's a decidedly different take, a work in progress - after I decided I wanted to work on my perspective and backgrounds a little more. I'm thinking of replacing puzzdog altogether since he's just STANDING there.

This post is all about BACKGROUNDS, for once. I've been somewhat remiss* about my attention to surroundings and environments for most of my artistic career: most of the time when I want a background for something I'll just haphazardly slap some trees or vague hints of vegetation wherever it seems appropriate. If I'm feeling particularly slothful, the subject of the drawing will be left idling in a plain stretch of landish stuff, with a cloud filled sky to suggest that I'm not totally phoning it in.

So I'm trying some (sorta) different stuff, for once!

This first doodle (which, by the way, is even tinier than the scan might lead you to believe) is of, believe it or not, a cockpit! It's kind of hard to tell, but there's a chair and a windshield (what the hell would you call that in space? CRUSHING BLACK VOID SHIELD?) and a dashboard of sorts. It's incomprehensible and probably completely covered in unlabeled buttons. Which I didn't draw.

NEXT UP: The pilot of the ship is mucking about in a cavern made of trash. How irresponsible! This is a start but hey, I really only have the middle and foreground plotted out. Buh.

This last one WOULD fall into the "I just drew some stupid trees" category but I really like these trees. It's also the rough drawing for a watercolor painting, which I've traced off onto a sheet of paper (directly off the computer screen) to refine before I... trace it off onto watercolor paper. It's kind of fussy about erasers!

* okay, no, I've pretty much ignored them for the most part.

Jeez! I keep forgetting to post here. ANYWAY: I've got quite a bit of a backlog of stuff to post here - mostly watercolors, since I've been making semi-regular posts at inspirimint.com about my work process* (okay, mostly WHINING about my work process, but that's what I do BEST) and that's where some of these are from.

After these I'll probably be using paper that's actually MEANT to be painted on, because this stuff, while some of it is nice, isn't cutting it anymore.

There is a story behind this one, sort of. Just aching to be told! You can pretend that in addition to being a cowboy mummy, he's also capable of turning invisible because that seems to be what's happening to his other hand there. Whoops!

This one is kind of old by now but I still like it! I like giving things irregular frames but euuuggh this would probably be better if I just cut it out of the surrounding paper and placed it on top of a darker piece of paper. (instead of simulating the effect in photoshop)
This is pretty new! From a couple of weekends ago, even. Both one of my best friends and my mom have the same birthday, so I cranked out a couple of cards featuring what else, dinosaurs and monsters. There's a bit of colored pencil on this sucker too.
Oh man. I really like how this one turned out, ignoring the atrociously shoddy text at the top of the card. Textured cardstock = THE BEST. Don't be sad, horrible chimera! YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL ON THE INSIDE (maybe)

Getting red hues to look right with watercolors seems to be a bit trickier than colors on the cooler end of the spectrum. One the fishy critter to the right they've gotten kind of muddy and gross... SOMEDAY I'll get this right!

I started off doodling up some rabbit heads and then gave the central one a body and a lumpy tail. It probably would have ended up as a dragon if I didn't (apparently) get distracted by something shiny that I flitted over to so I could add it to my nest of gaudy trinkets.

Again with the dodos! I don't know why I have such an affinity for goofy-looking animals. I think maybe animals with obvious structural problems trigger some kind of nurturing instinct in me, e.g: THAT DOG BRED TO HAVE A SMASHED UP FACE HAS RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS; I WILL HUG IT

(though it was island tameness, and not its inherent wackiness that contributed to the demise of the dodo. SO WIKIPEDIA WOULD HAVE US THINK)

THE FINAL SACRIFICE: A Drawing Adventure

A while back I watched an episode of MST3K featuring "The Final Sacrifice." It's a movie about cultists lead by a Satoris, man who bears a striking resemblance to Morrissey; Zap Rowsdower, a dumpy alcoholic with a DARK PAST (spoiler alert: he was still dumpy then too); Troy, a scrawny kid with gigantic eyebrows and a dead father. And a bunch of fighting in the wilderness of Canada!

I don't know what compelled me to do this, but I decided to start drawing the main characters, starting with Troy:
This looks nothing like him, but I like this look a lot.

This is probably closest to how he actually looks.
Next up: Zap Rowsdower! NOT DUMPY ENOUGH

I watched a pretty terrifying (and depressing! hohoho!) speculative docu-drama about nuclear war the other night, so I painted a dog person gazing at the skies in fear! (Whenever I tell my friends "I can TOO draw cute things!" my subconscious is like "no, no you can't. Stop LYING")

I'm freelancing at Calabash now, yet I still find time to churn out oodles of horrible doodles, mostly of apparently unhappy animals! OH NO

To start off, here's a flyin' monkey I scribbled out in photoshop last night. Not that crazy about the wings (and neither is he, apparently!)
Some photoshop paintin' practice.
Some older doodles I haven't bothered posting here yet: the cyclops rabbit is a somewhat older character of mine, created for my first lip sync exercise. The taller horned guy is a friend of hers whose personality I haven't really worked out yet (except to say he's mildly ashamed of being her friend)
Expression doodles! And a chair, for some reason...
More of the same characters: they find this mysterious fish critter in their fishtank, but it breathes air and they don't know where it came from. Margo (the rabbit) wants to fry it up, but Guillermo (the horned guy) wants to send it off to school. Margo agrees to not eat the little guy, but only if he works out her taxes.

I'll post more of these things later.

I spent a lot more time on this picture than I usually do (which will become readily apparent with the next few posts, I'm sure). Anyway, this fella is Remish! Terrible things happen to him on a regular basis because he is the subject of a terrible injoke between myself and my terrible friends.
